Welcome to Summerland Lodge
No. 56 on the Registry of the Grand Lodge of British Columbia and
Yukon A.F. & A.M.
In 1906, some local Freemasons realized that their number was
sufficient to form a Masonic Lodge. On the 15th of March, ten brethren
met in Adam Stark's store in the area we now know as Lower Town and
formally organized, leaving the matter of obtaining a dispensation in
the hands of Bro. Charles Stevens who, it is believed, was head of the
Summerland Telephone Company. Fifteen months passed with no apparent
headway, so another meeting was called, during which, the brethren
elected a slate of officers which included G.L. Parker as Worshipful
Master, S. Bartholomew as Senior Warden, W.A. Doherty as Junior Warden
and K.S. Hogg as Secretary.
Since W.Brother Parker was away in England when the dispensation was
received, J.C. Robson was elected and installed in his stead, becoming
the first master of the Lodge. Summerland Lodge No. 56 was instituted
on March 1, 1909, with an enrollment of twenty-six charter members: S.
Bartholomew, R. Clouston, T. Collinge, Albert Almeron Derrick, George
N. Doherty, W.A. Doherty, Harry Dunsdon, C. Featherstonhaugh, James
Fyffe, K.S. Hogg, J.A. Kirk, B.C. Moore, W. Nichol, G.H.W. Page, G.L.
Parker, Clarence E. Pineo, A. Richardson, J.C. Robson, E.J. Scott, T.
Short, Dr. Charles M. Smith, Rev. Herbert Ames Solly, Adam Stark, John
Tait, William E. Ward, S. M. Young. (Visitors to Summerland will notice
many of those names on street signs.) Summerland Lodge No. 56 received
its Warrant on December 19, 1909.
Summerland Lodge celebrated 100 years on 30 May 2009. A bronze
plaque has been mounted on a cairn in Lower Town commemorating the
event. Grand Master R. Glenn Allen was on hand for the ceremonies.
